Creative Drama is a well-known and useful method for social inclusion and refugee integration. Drama technics provides a humanistic and anti-discriminative learning atmosphere.

Drama tools can be used to the inclusion of the disadvantaged and excluded groups and being open to the differences, different backgrounds, different cultures. By using drama tools we can also improve empathy, breaking the barriers and stereotypes, intercultural learning and team building.

Creative drama is an improvisational, non-exhibitional, process-oriented form of drama, where participants are guided by a leader to imagine, enact, and reflect on experiences real and imagined. The creative drama takes children’s natural world, creative play, and develops it further, using theatre techniques, to create learning experiences which are for the participants. Drama specialist, Brian Way states in Development Through Drama, “Theatre is largely concerned with communication between actors and an audience; Drama is largely concerned with experience by the participants.” Creative drama is a very effective tool to include a disadvantaged groups because it is a discipline in which the sense of respect and empathy between individuals are developed and the principles of ethics, equality, and respect for differences are exercised. Furthermore, the integration of the disadvantaged group with the other group and the development of social, physical, emotional, language skills of the disadvantaged children are the one of the basic aims of creative drama. Self-confidence development, healthy communication and trust within the group, and the development of individual self-expression skills can be easily supported by creative drama.

Especially for the refugee groups, we can use drama tools to make them integrated into the host community and building friendships and mutual understanding atmosphere. Drama games, role plays, knowing each other activities, trust games, and team building activities are very deep activities to break the barriers between groups. Drama is focused on universal human rights and respect principles.

Refugees face the challenges of starvation, abduction, violence and obtaining admission into a protected country. A refugee is an individual who is fleeing his country to escape persecution based on race, religion, nationality or membership of a certain group or political opinion. A refugee’s challenges do not end once he is admitted into another country. He must adopt the local customs and language of the sheltering country. Due to their history of persecution, many refugees are uncomfortable dealing with legal paperwork in a foreign country, especially if it is in a language that they cannot understand. Many refugees also suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder after escaping from conditions of oppression and persecution.

One of the most important problems for the refugees is access to education. Even they have access to school they face many problems like cultural and language barriers, stereotypes, academic skill level differences, and others. Integration of the refugees must be supported by effective integration methods.
